What is ETIAS and how will it affect travellers visiting Europe?

The arrival of ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) represents a significant change in the way travelers visit Europe. This system aims to improve security and simplify the entry process for those arriving from visa-exempt countries.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a system created by the European Union to regulate the entry of citizens from visa-free countries visiting any of the 30 countries of the European Union (EU) and the Schengen Area. Its main purpose is to collect information about travelers before they arrive in Europe, allowing for a risk assessment that helps prevent security threats.

Furthermore, ETIAS is not only aimed at security, but also seeks to improve the experience of travelers. By carrying out a pre-assessment, it is expected that waiting times at border controls will be reduced, allowing visitors to enjoy their trip without setbacks.

It is important to mention that the implementation of ETIAS also implies a commitment to the protection of personal data. The European Union has established strict regulations on how the information collected will be handled and stored. Travelers can be assured that their data will be protected and that it will only be used for the purposes established by the system.

Who needs ETIAS?

ETIAS will apply to citizens of over 60 countries that can currently enter Europe without a visa. This includes nations such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, among others. It is important to note that those who already possess a valid visa for the Schengen area do not need to apply for ETIAS, as their entry requirements are different.

How to apply for ETIAS?

The application for ETIAS will be carried out through an online platform. Travelers will have to fill out a form with personal information, including their name, nationality, passport number, as well as details about their travel itinerary and duration in Europe.

Once the application is submitted, the system will process the data automatically. In most cases, the response will be provided within minutes. However, it is recommended that travelers start the process at least 72 hours before their trip to avoid any setbacks that may arise.

Duration, validity and cost of an ETIAS

The ETIAS authorization will be valid for three years, or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first. This means that travelers who obtain their authorization will be able to make multiple trips to Europe during this period, as long as their stays meet the requirements established by the Schengen area.

It is important to mention that, although the authorization is valid for a long time, travelers must still comply with the entry laws of each European country, including the maximum duration of stay. Generally, citizens of visa-exempt countries can stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

The cost of processing the ETIAS will be only 7 euros, an affordable rate compared to similar systems in other countries. In addition, this authorization will be completely free for minors under 18 years of age and those over 71 years of age. Although the price is low, it is crucial that travelers complete the process exclusively through the official website, as there are unofficial platforms that could charge excessive fees or even compromise the security of your personal information.
