Discover the Baths of La Hedionda

The Hedionda Baths, located in the Utrera massif in Casares, are an Asset of Cultural Interest with a rich and legendary history. It is said that its sulphurous smell comes from the last breath of the devil, expelled by Santiago. These ferruginous sulphurous baths, used since Roman times, are located near the Albarrán stream and the border with Manilva.

The Hedionda Baths are a unique architectural work, consisting of a central room with a spherical dome and two side galleries with barrel vaults. The building is in good condition and you can enter it free of charge, where a swimming pool awaits you at a pleasant temperature of 21ºC all year round. These waters have beneficial properties for the skin, as they help to alleviate problems such as dermatitis, rashes and atopic skin.

According to legend, Julius Caesar, after an exhausting battle, found refuge in Casares. By immersing himself in the sulphurous waters of the spring, he experienced a miraculous healing from herpes after the battle of Munda, prompting him to order the construction of these baths as a tribute to their healing power before facing Pompey.

Throughout history, the spa has been used by various cultures, with restoration work carried out by the Arabs and subsequent remodelling between the 18th and 20th centuries.

The Hedionda Baths have been visited by illustrious figures such as King Alfonso XI, the writer Washington Irving and the bandit José María El Tempranillo.

Although access is free of charge, the capacity of the spa is limited to 24 people. It is compulsory to make a reservation to gain access during the high season, from mid-June to mid-September, from 12.00 to 19.00 hours approximately.
