Dijous Bo, the biggest and most traditional fair in Mallorca

What is Dijous Bo?

Dijous Bo, which in Mallorcan means “good Thursday”, is the biggest traditional fair in Mallorca and one of the most important festivities in the Balearic Islands. This celebration attracts thousands of visitors not only from all corners of Mallorca, but also from the other islands of the archipelago and the mainland. Dijous Bo is celebrated in mid-November, filling the city of Inca with a great atmosphere.

With origins dating back several centuries, this fair initially began as a livestock market where local farmers and ranchers could sell and buy animals. Today, it has grown into a huge celebration with music, games, food stalls, and activities for the whole family.

Dijous Bo is one of the most popular events in Mallorca, where the streets of Inca fill with life and up to 200,000 people congregate in a single day. It is the fourth and last of the big fairs held in the city between October and November, marking the end of the festive season in the region and consolidating itself as one of the most important festivities on the island.

The history of Dijous Bo

The origin of Dijous Bo dates back to medieval times, when Inca, a town with a strong agricultural and livestock farming character, began to gain relevance as a trading post. Livestock markets were the backbone of the local economy, and Dijous Bo emerged as a special day on which buyers and sellers from all over the island gathered. Although the livestock aspect has lost some of its prominence over the years, the market spirit remains, and every year, Mallorcan farmers and livestock breeders continue to exhibit their products and animals at this great fair.

Over the centuries, Dijous Bo has grown and integrated elements of modern culture without losing its rural essence. Today, the event not only celebrates Inca’s agricultural history, but also the art, music, gastronomy and popular traditions that form part of the Mallorcan identity.

3. Correfoc: the magic of fire and music

The correfoc, a typical Balearic tradition, is one of the most eagerly awaited events. This spectacle of fire and music fills the streets of Inca with lights and figures of devils dancing to the sound of drums. The participants, known as “diables”, parade with torches and throw sparks into the air, creating a magical atmosphere.

4. Live music and dance performances

Music is a fundamental part of Dijous Bo. Throughout the week, different local groups and artists offer concerts and dance performances in the squares and streets of Inca. From folk music to more modern genres, the atmosphere is full of life and is ideal for enjoying with friends or family. Traditional Mallorcan dances also have their place in Dijous Bo, and it is common to see dance groups performing the “ball de bot”, a popular dance style that has been practised on the island for centuries.

5. Stalls selling Mallorcan handicrafts and products

The fair is a unique opportunity to purchase handmade products, mostly made by local artisans. From handmade leather goods to pottery and typical Mallorcan textiles, each stall features a variety of typical Mallorcan products. You will also find gastronomic products such as sobrasada, ensaimadas, cheeses and Mallorcan paprika, all handmade.

6. Animal and agricultural exhibitions

Although Dijous Bo has evolved, it maintains its connection with the agricultural and livestock world. Visitors can see exhibitions of livestock, from sheep and horses to cows and goats, and learn about the island’s native breeds. In addition, there are displays of old and modern agricultural machinery, which is of interest to those who wish to see how technology has evolved in the Mallorcan countryside.

Dijous Bo is a very popular event, so it is important to be prepared to enjoy the fair in the best possible way, so we give you some tips:

  1. Public transport: Due to the large number of visitors, public transport is the best option for getting to Inca. You can get there from Palma by bus or train in just over half an hour, but if you can, don’t travel by car to avoid parking problems.
  2. Comfortable clothing: The fair is spread over several streets and squares, so it is advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for Mallorca’s autumn weather, which can be cool, especially at night.
  3. Timetable of activities: Be sure to check the Dijous Bo activity programme in advance, as there is a wide variety of events and shows that may overlap. Choosing the activities that most interest you will allow you to make the most of your visit.
