Excursions to enjoy in Alicante

Today, we are dedicating an article to all the people visiting the province of Alicante who not only want to enjoy the beach but also wish to go on some excursions in the area. Alicante invites you to explore its cultural and natural treasures. Join us and discover a comprehensive list of very interesting excursions that will take you to experience the essence of Alicante and everything this charming region has to offer if you are staying here.

Santa Bárbara Castle

Santa Bárbara Castle is one of the main landmarks of Alicante. Its location atop Mount Benacantil provides stunning views of the city and the coast. The fortress has a fascinating history dating back to Roman times, but it was during the Muslim and Christian occupations when it acquired its current appearance. You can access the castle via a road, but for a more authentic experience, I recommend hiking up on foot. There are several strategically located viewpoints along the way for you to rest and enjoy panoramic views. Once at the top, you can explore the castle, its walls, towers, and exhibition rooms that narrate the history of the fortress and the city.

Tabarca Island

Tabarca Island is a natural gem located about 11 km off the coast of Alicante. It is the only inhabited island in the province and serves as a perfect refuge for those seeking an escape from urban life. The village of Tabarca features narrow and picturesque streets, a small church, and several restaurants and shops. But the highlights are its beaches and coves with crystal-clear waters. You can rent a bicycle or take a stroll to explore the island or immerse yourself in the sea for snorkeling or diving to discover the rich marine life of its shores.

Montgó Natural Park

Montgó Natural Park is a perfect destination for nature and hiking enthusiasts. Mount Montgó, which gives its name to the park, is an impressive rock formation rising above the coast. There are several hiking trails that will take you through the park, each with different levels of difficulty and duration. From the top of Montgó, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean, the surrounding plains, and nearby mountains. The park also hosts a rich Mediterranean flora and fauna, with a variety of plants and animals.

Wine Route

The Alicante Wine Route will take you through the vineyards and wineries of the region to discover its winemaking tradition. Alicante is known for its red and sweet wines made from the Monastrell grape, but it also produces high-quality white and rosé wines. You can visit the wineries to learn about the winemaking process, from harvesting to fermentation and aging in oak barrels. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to taste different wine varieties and pair them with delicious local dishes. Some wineries also offer activities such as vineyard tours and wine tastings.

Canelobre Caves

The Canelobre Caves are a natural wonder you can’t miss. Located in the Sierra de Cabeçó d’Or, these caves feature impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations sculpted by nature over thousands of years. The main cave has a height of 70 meters and is the tallest in Spain. During the guided tour, you can explore different chambers, some of which are spectacularly illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. The acoustics of the cave are excellent, and concerts and performances are often held inside due to its great resonance.

Castle Route

Alicante has a rich history reflected in its numerous castles and fortresses. The Castle Route is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the region’s history and discover the military architecture from different periods. Some of the standout castles to visit are the Castle of Biar, rising over a hill and offering a panoramic view of the surrounding valley, the Castle of Sax, with an impressive keep tower, and the Castle of Villena, one of the largest castles in Spain, dating back to the 12th century.

La Alcudia Archaeological Park

The La Alcudia Archaeological Park is a window into the region’s history. Here, you can explore the remains of the ancient Iberian city of La Alcudia and the Roman site of L’Alcúdia. During the visit, you will see ancient houses, mosaics, tombs, and other vestiges of daily life from that period. There is also a monographic museum where archaeological objects found on the site are exhibited. La Alcudia is especially famous for the Iberian bust of the Lady of Elche, one of the most important finds of Iberian archaeology.

Located in the Sierra de Aitana, the reserve houses a wide variety of animals in semi-liberty, including lions, tigers, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, and many others. You can explore the reserve on a safari in a vehicle or a tourist train, allowing you to see the animals in an environment that mimics their natural habitat. There are also walking areas where you can see smaller animals and enjoy the beauty of the mountainous landscape. Safari Aitana is a perfect choice for a family excursion and for those who want a unique experience in close contact with nature.
