Alicante‘s Costa Blanca is a paradise for those seeking adventure and connection with the sea. Its sea caves, true jewels of nature, offer unique destinations. In this guide, we invite you to explore some of the most fascinating caves in the region, ideal for discovering by paddle surf or kayak. Get ready for an experience full of history, nature and incomparable beauty!

1. Cova Tallada (Dénia)

Located between Dénia and Jávea, the Cova Tallada is in the heart of the Montgó natural park and the San Antonio marine reserve. This enclave on the Costa Blanca stands out for its rich history. It is a huge cave with several rooms. It was excavated centuries ago to extract large blocks of stone used in the construction of buildings such as the church of Xàbia.

Access and advice: to visit the cave it is necessary to make an appointment at certain times of the year, both for access by land and by sea.

You can get there by kayak or paddle surf from the coast, or if you prefer, there is a path that starts at the Torre del Gerro, a watchtower built in the middle of the 16th century. Access to the cave by land is somewhat complicated, the only entrance to the cave is down the rocks with the help of a chain, and caution is advised. Once in the cave, there are dangerous drop-offs into dangerous areas.

2. Llop Marí Cave (Jávea)

In Jávea, near the Cape of San Antonio, is the Llop Marí Cave. This cave owes its name to the monk seals (llop marí in Valencian) that inhabited the area in ancient times. The cave welcomes you with a wide entrance and a small beach inside.

Access and advice: during the summer, due to its popularity, access is restricted and you must book in advance to gain access.

The most exciting way to get there is from the Arenal beach or the port of Jávea. The kayak or paddle surfing trip is quiet and allows you to enjoy a protected natural area, so we must be respectful of the environment.

It is important to access only when the tide is calm.

3. Cave of the Arches (Benitatxell)

The Cueva de los Arcos is a true natural monument. The erosive action of the water has created this unique cave. The arches sculpted by the erosion of the sea create a magical and photogenic atmosphere, which is why it has become a very popular place.

The entrance to the cave is impressive and an excellent place for snorkelling and underwater photography.

Access and tips: Accessible by kayak or paddle surf, the cove is a very visited place, so it is advisable to visit early in the morning. Caution is advised so as not to slip on the rocks wet by the sea water. There is an area that is considered to be the longest underground water outlet to the sea in Spain and you will need to be an expert speleologist to explore it.

4. Fish Cave (Benitatxell)

The “Cueva de los Peces”, also known as Cova del Moraig or Cova del Riu Blanc, is not a sea cave, but a large crevice created by the detachment of a sheet of limestone rock from the Moraig Fault. This fracture, which extends down to sea level, forms a kind of interior pool open to the sky, allowing sunlight to enter. The Moraig Fault, of great geological interest, was declared a Natural Monument in 2022.

Access and tips: Inside the Cova del Moraig flows the underground river riu Blanc, which discharges very cold water from the Benissa aquifer. This generates a blurred vision effect due to the mixture of fresh and salt water, which can be observed when wearing a snorkelling mask. To swim in the cave, it is advisable to wear a wetsuit due to the low water temperatures. If paddle boarding, be aware that the entrance is narrow and you will have to lie down on the board. If the sea is rough, it will be necessary to get off the board to avoid hitting the rock.

5. Òrguens Cave (Jávea)

The Cova dels Òrguens is a special corner located at the foot of Cap de la Nau, a place that allows the entry of boards or kayaks and deserves to be visited with the utmost respect. This natural wonder, nestled in the remote and rugged regions of Jávea, lies under the lighthouse of Cabo de la Nao, more than 4 kilometres from Cala Granadella or Cala Portixol, waiting for those adventurers willing to discover it.

At over 46 metres high at its central point, the Cova dels Òrguens is one of the largest sea caves in Spain and a must-see destination for visitors to the region. Its imposing cliffs offer a unique opportunity to explore and unveil the secrets of this isolated cave.
