The festival of the Cap de Bou de Talapi in sa Pobla

An emblematic event is held every year in the town of sa Pobla, on the island of Mallorca. It is the Fiesta del Cap de Bou de Talapi, a celebration that takes place every July as part of the festivities of Santa Margalida and Sant Jaume. This festivity is not only a tribute to an archaeological piece of great value, but also a representation of the traditions and cultural identity of sa Pobla.

Cap de Bou de Talapi

The undisputed star of the festival is the “Cap de Bou de Talapi”, an ancient sculpture that has been the object of admiration and study over the years. This sculpture was found by Josep Cervera Camps in a cave in Talapi in the mid-20th century. It is made of bronze and measures 39 cm, and is a piece of great archaeological value. It dates from the 4th-2nd century BC and represents the head of an ox, associated with the goddess Tanit. It is the oldest, most original and representative piece of the history of sa Pobla and its primitive culture. This sculpture was a protective sign for the population that represented the power necessary to obtain food, the strength to go to war, or fertility to have offspring.

Origins of the festival

The Festival of the Cap de Bou de Talapi has its roots in an initiative promoted by a group of young cultural activists from sa Pobla. In 2018, these enthusiasts decided to create an event that would highlight the importance of the Cap de Bou de Talapi, which represents a significant symbol of the region’s artistic and cultural heritage. Since then, the festival has evolved and grown, attracting a large number of participants and visitors every year. One detail that makes this festival very identifiable is that all participants must wear yellow, a colour that fills the streets with joy.

Activities and celebrations

During the Fiesta del Cap de Bou de Talapi, the town of sa Pobla comes alive with a variety of leisure and cultural activities. The programmed events are designed to involve people of all ages and to highlight the importance of the Cap de Bou de Talapi in local history and culture.

The celebration begins in the morning with a bicycle gathering to go in search of the “Cap de Bou” and its subsequent transfer to the village, always accompanied by many children who take part in this route.

This is followed by the proclamation of the festival, which kicks off the celebration with a great batucada.

The festival continues with a parade through the streets of sa Pobla. In this parade, the participants carry replicas of the Cap de Bou de Talapi, while local music bands liven up the route. This event brings together the people of sa Pobla in an atmosphere of joy and celebration.

Experts in archaeology and local culture present their research and findings, offering attendees an in-depth view of the importance of this piece.

Workshops and activities for children

For the little ones, the festival offers a series of workshops and activities designed to educate and entertain. Children can take part in craft workshops where they learn to create their own replicas of the Cap de Bou de Talapi, as well as games and competitions that encourage teamwork and knowledge of local history. These activities are not only fun, but also help to instil a sense of pride and belonging in the younger generation.

Local gastronomy

Gastronomy plays a central role in the Fiesta Cap de Bou de Talapi. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of typical dishes from the region, prepared with local ingredients and following traditional recipes. Food is an essential part of the celebration and a reflection of sa Pobla’s rich culinary heritage.
