The Paprika Fair in Felanitx, Mallorca

Mallorca is known for its beaches and landscapes, but it also has a lesser-known facet: its agricultural and gastronomic tradition. Among the events that best reflect this heritage is the Paprika Fair, a celebration that combines tradition, gastronomy and local culture in a single event.

What is the Paprika Fair?

The Paprika Fair in Mallorca is an annual celebration dedicated to one of the most iconic ingredients of Mallorcan gastronomy: paprika. This condiment is not only essential in the preparation of typical dishes, but also has a special place in the island’s agricultural culture. The fair is an opportunity to honour the harvesting of peppers and their transformation into paprika, as well as to encourage the preservation of this tradition among the new generations.

In Mallorca, paprika is mainly used in the production of products such as sobrasada, one of the island’s most famous sausages. Without paprika, sobrasada would not have its characteristic red colour or its spicy flavour, which is so popular with Mallorcans and visitors alike.

When and where the Paprika Fair is held

The Paprika Fair called “Fira del Pebre bord” is held every October in the charming village of Felanitx, a town located in the southeast of Mallorca, famous for its agricultural and winemaking tradition. The event usually takes place in mid-October, coinciding with the harvesting of the peppers and the beginning of the drying and grinding process that will result in paprika.

Felanitx, some 50 km from Palma de Mallorca, is a place that retains much of its rural charm, with narrow cobbled streets, traditional stone houses and a tranquil atmosphere that makes it the perfect setting for such a unique fair.

What the event consists of

The Paprika Fair is much more than just an exhibition of products. It is an event that involves the whole local community, from farmers and paprika producers to artisans and cooks.

1. Agricultural and gastronomic market

The heart of the fair is its farmers’ market, where you can buy fresh peppers, products made with paprika (such as sobrasada), oils, preserves and other artisanal products. It is also an excellent opportunity to meet local producers up close and learn about the process of growing and drying peppers.

2. Tastings and live cooking

One of the main attractions of the fair are the gastronomic tastings. Local chefs prepare traditional dishes using paprika as the main ingredient. You can’t miss the opportunity to try freshly made sobrasada, accompanied by a good piece of Mallorcan bread. In addition, live cooking demonstrations are organised where local chefs show off their skills and share recipes based on this ingredient.

3. Cultural and traditional activities

The fair also has a varied programme of cultural activities including traditional dances, live music and exhibitions of local art. In Felanitx, as in many towns in Mallorca and other regions of Spain, an ancient popular tradition is kept alive: “the giants”. These giants, known locally as gegants, are large human figures that usually represent historical or popular characters. They are built with light frames of wood and cardboard, and are carried by people inside them, who make them dance during local festivals.

4. Workshops and competitions

For those interested in learning more about paprika making, workshops are organised where visitors can participate in the drying and grinding process. In addition, the fair often includes paprika competitions, where local producers compete for the title of the best paprika of the season.
